How to Use Avosil® & Avogel®

Indication:
Avogel® is intended for use in the management of hypertrophic and many keloid scars.

Intended Use and Benefits:
Avogel® is an FDA approved water-based gel pad called a hydrogel. It is soft and flexible which allows direct contact with scar tissue, including the pits and steep contours of irregular scars. Avogel is intended to soften, flatten, and fade red, dark, or raised hypertrophic and keloid scars resulting from surgery, burns, and injury. Use of Avogel is effective in reducing scar firmness and in relieving the pruritus (itching), pain, and tenderness often associated with hypertrophic and keloid scars. Avogel has been shown to be most effective in improving scars less than six months.

Precautions:
DO NOT use on open wounds. Avogel must not be used when the scar (or wound) is draining, infected, or damaged, even if the skin has scabs or stitches. Avogel is not intended to be placed in direct contact with bodily fluids. Do not use Avogel while swimming or bathing. Discontinue use in the event of itching, rash, redness, pain, swelling, or other signs of discomfort. Contact your physician if signs of infection occur (increased pain, swelling, redness, or drainage), a rash or odor develops or any other unexpected symptoms occur. Do not wear the Avogel for more than 18 hours to avoid skin maceration. Discontinue use of the hydrogel if it becomes dry and inflexible.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Preparation

  • Wash and completely dry hands before use.

  • Gently cleanse the scar and surrounding skin with mild soap before application.  Ensure that the scar and surrounding skin are clean and dry.

  • Remove the Avogel from the foil pouch by pulling apart the Layers from the top right corners of the foil pouch.

  • Unfold the white protective sheet and let it serve as your work area.

Sizing

  • With scissors, trim the Avogel to the size of the scar, allowing at least one half of an inch of the Avogel to extend beyond the scar.

  • Place the unused portion of the Avogel back into the foil pouch and store it in the re-sealable bag provided.  Store it at room temperature.

  •  Peel off the blue plastic backing.  Save the plastic backing for storing the Avogel after use.

  • Application

  • Gently press the adhesive side of the Avogel over the scar so it fits firmly over the contours of the scar. Make sure the edges of the Avogel extend one half of an inch beyond the scar border.  Netting, gauze, cloth bandages, stretch or pressure garments may be worn over the Avogel to keep it in place.

  •

    Treatment

Wear the Avogel continuously for a minimum of 12 hours each day.  Do not exceed a treatment time of 18 hours per day.

    Cleaning and Storage

  • After treatment, wash the Avogel with warm water and a mild soap (Do not use harsh cleaning agents like dish detergents).  Dry the Avogel with a clean cloth.  Replace the blue backing on the adhesive side of the Avogel.  Store the Avogel in the re-sealable bag provided in a cool, dry place. Discard Avogel sheeting after 4 – 5 uses.

  • Duration of Use
Most patients will view an improvement in the appearance of their scar within approximately two weeks of the first application of Avogel. Symptomatic relief may be experienced sooner. The average treatment period is approximately 8 weeks, depending upon the age and size of the scar. For best results, continue using Avogel for four weeks after the scar has reached desirable appearance.

    Benefits of Treatment
In clinical studies, Avogel has promoted improvement in scar symptoms of itching (pruritus), pain, and tenderness of scars. Also, scars have become softer, less elevated and returned toward normal skin color. Avogel is non-invasive and thus has no risk of causing additional scarring.
